A DMZ Zone (Demilitarized Zone) is an isolated network that is configured to provide an additional layer of security between an organization’s internal network and the public internet. This is also known as Network Segmentation.
The DMZ acts as a buffer zone between the internal network and the internet, where sensitive or critical systems and services can be isolated from the outside world.
A major advantage to a DMZ – Demilitarized Zone is that devices which are in it are on a separate network than the primary organization, which essentially means that vulnerable devices such as CCTV DVR’s and FTP servers are separate from the working network environment.
DVR Security Systems
Most DVR CCTV Security systems that are in use today are at risk for being attacked for a number of reasons. 1) These devices are running outdated versions of the Linux Operating system, and are not being updated with the latest security patches. 2) These devices generally are using the default admin/password set by the manufacturer, or in some cases do not have a password set at all 3) They have open ports for mobile viewing capabilities.
Having open ports does not mean that your organization will be attacked, it just means that extra security practices and configurations need to be placed on your network to reduce the potential of an attack. For example, this can be done by configuring 2FA-2 Factor Authentication, or adding an Intrusion Prevention System to your network, and using a DMZ Zone for external facing network devices.
By using a DMZ Zone, the ports can remain open, and no functionality is removed, it just means that if an intruder successfully hacked into your DVR or FTP Server, the only devices they would be able to access would be those within the DMZ Zone itself. Devices such as Company servers, Desktops, time clocks and employee workstations which are located on the primary network would not be affected as a result of an attack towards the DMZ Zone.
